A significant part of the pyrolysis oil is made up of pyrolytic lignin, the pyrolytic lignin obtained after fractionation is a highly viscous liquid. The pyrolytic lignin is a (cracked) polymer (highly cross-linked) matrix of phenolic derivatives, with a broad molecular weight product distrubution, consisting of all kinds of small (monomeric) phenolic derivatives, phenolic (derivatives) oligomers and larger lignin polymer fractions. The derivatives are not fully saturated and therefore still have vacant positions (ring positions) for various reactions, like crosslink and condensation reactions. Due to these properties, the pyrolytic lignin is an interesting renewable source, and possible substitution for fossil phenol in e.g. various resin and coating applications. Typically up to 25 wt% of pyrolytic lignin can be recovered from pyrolysis oil, but this also depends on the raw material used and process conditions applied in pyrolysis.
